APPLIED ARTS GROUPS AND STUDIOS. The Leningrad Oblast amateur and folk arts are mostly represented by activity of applied arts groups and studios. On the one hand their activity is aimed at preservation of applied arts traditions (ethnography area), on the other hand it is aimed at creation of new art forms (modern folk arts). The Leningrad Oblast Culture and Entertainment Centres house 21 studios bearing a status of “public master group”. Ethnography area crafts: traditional embroidery; weaving; beadwork; wood carving; silver bark braiding; painting on wood; patchwork and lace making; making folk costumes, traditional dolls, clay and wooden toys. Some folk arts groups master several kinds of applied arts, among them is a folk studio “Domovushka” (Lodeynoye Pole Town), a folk studio at the House of Russian Folk Arts (Novoselye Village, Slantsi District). Folk studio “Bereginya” at the Centre of Social and Cultural Activities in Tikhvin Town and folk arts groups at the Centre of Social and Cultural Activities in Vinnitsi Village, Podporozhye District specialize in traditional embroidery. Traditional dolls are made in the studio “Rukodelnitsa” (“Needlewoman”) at the Centre of Arts for the Young in Gatchina Town, in the folk studio “Shkola Remesel” (“Crafts School”) at the Centre of Social and Cultural Activities in Lebyazhye Urban Village, Lomonosov District. Applied arts studios “Narodnye Traditsiy” (“Folk Traditions”) (silver bark items) in Gostilitsi Village, Lomonosov District and “Russkaya Rospis” (“Russian painting”) (painting on wood) at the Centre of Social and Cultural Activities in Luga Town also work successfully. The Centre of Crafts Revival in Alekhovschina Village, Lodeynoye Pole District studies pottery. Modern folk arts are widely presented. Folk arts studios and groups work on designing of new applied arts forms. These basically are items for interior decoration – things made of porcelain and marble, forging, embroidered pictures, collages, tapestry. For production of these items new materials, instruments and modern equipment are used. Study groups of applied arts and modern patchwork are organized at the Leningrad Oblast Education and Methodology Centre of Culture and Arts. In 1999 the First International Festival of traditional and modern patchwork “Loskutny Stil” (“Patch Style”) was held.
