Lomonosov District

Subject / Topography/Administrative - territorial division

LOMONOSOV DISTRICT. Area: 1990.8 sq. km. Population: 65,300. Established in 1927. L. D. comprises Bolshaya Izhora and Lebyazhye urban settlements and 140 rural localities. It borders St. Petersburg and Kingisepp, Volosovo, and Gatchina Districts of Leningrad Oblast. The adm. authorities of L. D. are in Lomonosov District of the neighboring subject territory of Russia, i.e. in St. Petersburg. The railway branch St. Petersburg-Kalische-Ust-Luga (built in 1926-31), and the St. Petersburg-Tallinn highway extend across the district. L. D. is located in the northern part of the Izhora Hills and on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The Gostilitsky State wildlife/botanic preservation (see Gostilitsi), State hydrological and geological natural monument «The Radon Springs and Lakes near Lopukhinka Village» (established in 1976), and “Lebyazhye” water moor reserve (see Lebyazhye.) L. D. has no large rivers. A feature of those lands are numerous boulders brought there by the glacier retreating northward in prehistoric times. 3 km away from Lomonosov is the ”Bison” boulder, the largest one in the North-West of Russia (4.5 m long and 2 m high.) In ancient times, those lands were inhabited by Baltic Finnish tribes, the ancestors of the Izhora. The widespread medieval sepulchrum mound burials are attributed to the Slav invasion. In the 13th century, Novgorod’s adm. center and fortress Koporye emerged (see Koporye Fortress.) As in other regions of Ingermanlandia, immigrants from Finland (Ingermanlandian Finns) settled there in the 17th century. On the Gulf of Finland coast there are Krasnaya Gorka and Seraya Loshad, forts that once belonged to the system of defense of the Kronshtadt Fortress. In memory of the hostilities in the territory of L. D. during the Civil War and WW2, monuments are installed, some of them belonging to the “Green Belt of Glory.” Among the most important architectural monuments of the district are the Ropsha palace and park ensemble (Ropsha settlement.) The proximity to St. Petersburg determined emergence of many landowners’ estates in the territory of L. D.: Voronina, Gostilitsi, Koporye, Lopukhinka, Ust-Ruditsa. Related to L. D. are the biographies of scientists M. V. Lomonosov (see Ust-Ruditsa), N. I. Pirogov, and I. P. Belavenets (see Bolshaya Izhora), writers M. E. Saltykov-Schedrin and V. V. Bianchi, and artist I. E. Repin. Lomonosov Town (St. Petersburg) has Lomonosov museum of the local history , Lomonosov central district library, Lomonosov children’s library; 22 libraries exist in various localities. The district has 22 culture centers, Children’s Creativity Center, “Rubicon” theater school (opened in 2002), and the Tuutari Park Alpine skiing center on Duderhof Heights. The “Baltiysky Luch” newspaper has been published since 1931. Orthodox parishes exist in the urban settlements of Lebyazhye and Bolshaya Izhora, Gostilitsi village, Annino settlement, Gora-Valdai village (see Holy Trinity Church), Gorbunki village, and Koporye village. A wooden Lutheran church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Hietamäki parish of the Evangelic Lutheran Church of Ingria) was built in Annolovo village in 1995. On the site of the former Lutheran church in Yalgelevo village (destroyed in WW2), a memorial cross was installed in 1997.
