The Tikhvin Dormition Convent (the town of Tikhvin). The parish wooden church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built on the Tikhvinka River bank in the memory of the Finding of the miracle-working icon of the Mother of God the Hodigitria (Later - the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God) on 26 June 1383. Between 1507 and 1515 according to the order of Great Prince Vasily III Ioannovich the stone cube five-domed six-pier with three apsises Cathedral of the Dormition (builders Dm. Syrkov and Fryazin) was built per sample the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Moscow Kremlin at the same place. The cathedral was visited by Vasily III (in 1526) and Ivan IV (in 1547). According to the order of Ivan IV a coenobitic monastery was organised attached to the cathedral on 12 February 1560. The complex, built by F.D. Syrkov, was surrounded with a wooden wall and a ditch. The two storeyed refectory chamber with the church of the Nativity of the Mother of God was built in 1581, during 1591-1593 the Holy Gate with the church of the Ascennsion of our Lord Jesus Christ and the side-altar of St. Theodore Sreatelates, the Great Martyr. In 1593-1600 a five-shatyor three-tier bell loft was constructed for the money og Boris Godunov. In 1613 the monastery withstood a siege of Swedish troops. In 1623 the monastery vastly suffered from a fire. In 1668-1670 the side-altar of the Prophet Elijah and the side-altar of the Apostle John the Theologian (the architect Larion Osipov) were built to the cathedral, stone towers were constructed above the West and East Gates of the monastery where later the church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God and the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker were created. In 1682-1690 stone hospital chambers with the church of the Apostle Andrew (later - the church of the Twelve Apostles), archimandrite's chambers, cellarer's and public cells and cells for brethren were built. The church of the Intercession of the Mother of God (1691, 1699-1702) and the chapel of the Icon of the Mother of God ""The Intercessoress of the Sinful"" were the last constructions of the 17th century. Since 1721 a school and alms-house were opened in the monastery the firsy time in the town of Tikhvin. The Monastery was classified as the first class monastery, it was in 'Russian Emperors's good graces: it was visited by Peter I (in 1717), Yelizaveta Petrovna with the future Peter III and Catherine II (in 1747), Paul I (in 1799), Alexander I (in 1823) and Alwxander II (in 1858). During the repairs of the cathedral in 1795-1798 the hipped roof and bulbous domes were done, the cathedral was painted by the Yaroslavl craftsmen under the direction of Longin Shustov. Towers and brick walls were erected during 1784-1801. A stone building of the alms-house with the church of the Icon of Mother of God ""Consolation of All Who Sorrow"" was built in 1802-1804, in 1803 an ecclesiastical college was opened. The main gate (it was constructed in 1805) were decorated with the grill from the fence of the Anichkov Palace accoeding to the order of Paul I. In 1860-1865 the Tikhvin church was enlarged with the stone chapel ""Krylechko (Porch)"" made in the forms of the Russian ""fretwork"" of the 17th century (the architect N.L. Benois; in 1871-1877 he rebuilt the church of the Intercession of the Mother of God in the ""Russo-Roman"" style, later the church was reconsecrated as the church of the Exaltation of the Holy and Vivifying Cross). In 1871-1876 the refectory church was rebuilt and reconsecrated in the honour of the Intercession of the Mother of God. Monks and superiors of the monastery, Prince Simeon Prozorovsky (schemamonk Sergius), a leader of the defence of the monastery at Trouble Times, the historian Ya.I. Berednikov, the explorer of the olden time I.P. Mordvinov; A.P. Rimsky-Korsakov, the father of the composer were buried on the territory of the monastery. The monastery was closed about 1924, the Cathedral of the Dormition was closed in the 1930s, the Tikhvin church was closed in 1937. The cemetery, hotel, eastern wall with the tower of St. Nicholas and church, northern wall were completely destroyed. Cells and churches were used for dwelling and for manufactures. After 1955 158 icons from the cathedral were removed to the State Russian Museum. A part of the archives and library is housed in the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences on present days. In 1968 some apartments were passed to the Tikhvin Memorial Historical ans Architectural Art Museum. In october 1944 the Tikhvin church was returned to the parish, it was the only working church in the district before 1989. The monastery was again opened in July 1995, on 9 July 1997 the first Liturgy was performed by Vladimir , Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga. Hegumen Euphemius (Shashorin) has been being the superior of the monastery since 1998. In 2000-2003 bells were installed. The miracle-working icon of the Mother of God captured by the German troops in 1941 during the occupation of the town of Tikhvin. On 8 July 2004 it was returned into the monastery.
