CHILDREN’S ARTS SCHOOLS (CAS). In the last years Children’s Musical Schools (CMS) and Children’s Painting Schools (CPS) have had a growing tendency for unification into Children’s Arts Schools (CAS). By 2007 the Leningrad oblast had had 104 CAS, CMS and СPS with about 19 thousand children and teenagers. They are taught by about 2 thousand teachers. Ten schools work according to special programmes of amateur and folk arts. The Russian Federation Ministry of Culture and the Leningrad Oblast Government Culture Committee established annual personal scholarships (50 scholarships) to support the most gifted students. Modern CAS play the role of local Centres of Culture and Arts. One of the most important areas of their work is educational and concert activities. Students and teachers give concerts-lectures at comprehensive schools, hold art exhibitions, together with Houses and Palaces of Culture they take part in town and village festivities. CAS students successfully participate in numerous contests and competitions, including international ones. Every fourth CAS graduate continues his/her professional education at different specialized educational institutions. Many of them, having become qualified specialists, come back to CAS as teachers.
