VSEVOLOZHSK DISTRICT, a part of Leningrad Oblast. Area: 2945.4 sq. km. Population: 215,200. Adm. center: Vsevolozhsk Town. Comprises Sertolovo Town, six urban settlements (Dubrovka, settlement named after Morozov, settlement named after Sverdlov, Kuzmolovsky, Rahja, Toksovo), and 126 rural localities. Located in the southern and south-eastern part of the Karelian Isthmus. Borders St. Petersburg and Priozersk District. The southern border is along the Neva, and the eastern border, along the Lake Ladoga shore. It was established in 1936 (separated from Suburban District of Leningrad Oblast.) The St. Petersburg-Murmansk motor road and the railway branches connecting St. Petersburg to Sortavala and to the east of Leningrad Oblast are extending across the district. The northern and south-eastern parts of V. D. have no direct transport communication (via St. Petersburg only), since driving through the Rzhevka Military Range located in the district’s area is forbidden. Devyatkino subway station and Rzhevka airport, a part of the eastern half-ring of the ring road around St. Petersburg are located in V. D. Construction of satellite towns of St. Petersburg are planned in Novodevyatkino and Kudrovo. The district’s landscape is diversified. The eastern and southern parts are covered by waterlogged plains; hilly areas (Lembolovo Heights, Koltushi Hills) begin further westwards, while the extreme north-west is a wavy plain where the Okhta, Sestra, and Volchya Rivers originate. The district has the “Karelian Isthmus” national park , and the “Nevsky” recreational forest. Archeological relics are scarce in V. D., such as the Stone Age sites near Lakes Lembolovskoye and Hepojarvi, or medieval village site near the mouth of the Morye River. At the break of the 1st and 2nd millenniums AD, the district’s area was populated mostly by Izhorians. In the 9th – 11th centuries, the “trade road from the Vikings to the Greeks” extended across that territory. In the 17th century, the district belonged to Sweden. From 1708, it was in St. Petersburg Gubernia (from 1780, the west of V. D. belonged to St. Petersburg Uyezd, and the east, to Shlisselburg Uyezd.) A large proportion of the population consisted of Ingermanlandian Finns whose most compact settlements were around Toksovo and Koltushi. In the 18th – 19th centuries, numerous nobility country estates appeared (Vartemäki, Ostrovki, Priyutino, Pushkina Gorka, Ryabovo, Irinovka.) Koltushi is related to the activity of physiologist Academician I. P. Pavlov (see I. P. Pavlov Museum.) In 1941-44, V. D. was blockaded together with Leningrad. “The Road of Life” extended via the district and Vsevolozhsk Town. In January 1943, the siege-breaking operation of the Leningrad Front started from the territory of V. D. Multiple monuments remind you of the wartime events (“The Nameless Height”, “The Broken Ring” etc.), and “The Road of Life”, “The Road of Victory” and “The Nevsky Spot” museums. The district has 13 active houses of culture and other socio-cultural institutions, and secondary vocational schools: two trade schools and an agricultural college. The “Vsevolozhskiye Vesti” newspaper is published. In the 1990s, restoration of Orthodox churches began (see the Church of St. Sophia and her Three Daughters , St. Faith, St. Hope and St. Love in Vartemäki village;The Church of St. Peter of Athos and St. Princess Olga in Morye village.) In 1997, the wooden church of St. Gennadius and Euphimius of Novgorod was built in the Kovalevo Cemetery. The centers of parishes of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria are in Toksovo and Koltushi (see also St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church in Novosaratovka settlement, S. J.
