Volosovo District

Subject / Topography/Administrative - territorial division

VOLOSOVO DISTRICT, a part of Leningrad Oblast. Area: 2680.5 sq. km. Population: 46,900. Adm. center: Volosovo Town. The district comprises Kikerino urban settlement, and 202 rural localities. It borders Kingisepp, Lomonosov, Gatchina, and Luga Districts. Established in 1927 (in 1963-65, it formed a part of Kingisepp District.) Railway lines connect V. D. to Gatchina, St. Petersburg, Kingisepp, and Ivangorod. The Tallinn Highway crosses the northern part of V. D. The Oblast level roads include Gatchina – Opolye, Pruzhitsi – Osmino – Tolmachovo, and Kempolovo – Vyra – Tosno – Shapki routes. It is located in the central part of the Izhora Hills, typical for which are vast open areas and smaller woodlands. Its southern part is in the basin of the middle course of the Luga River in a forest zone (in all, forests cover up to 60% of the V. D. area.) Nearly all the bodies of water (Lemovzha, Saba, Vruda, and Oredezh rivers) are concentrated in the south of V. D. The “Dontso” tract is a natural monument. The district’s area includes a part of the Upper Oredezh natural historic park. Very many archeological relics have been found in V. D. related to the culture of Slav and Baltic Finnish tribes (Izhora and Vod.) Sepulchrum burials are near actually every village. Some toponyms have retained memory of ancient pagan beliefs, elements of which were found as late as in the 16th century despite the spread of the Orthodoxy (Volosovo, from the Slav god Volos/Veles; Arbonye village, from “arbuis”, pagan priests-sorcerers of the medieval Vod). In the 18th-19th centuries, numerous country estates of nobility appeared in the district’s area (Gomontovo, Gubino, Izvara, Kaskovo, Raskulitsi, Seltso, Smerdovitsi, Syaglitsi, Terpilitsi, Torosovo, Khrevitsi.) V. D. is related to the biographies of N. K. Roerich, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, and N. N. Demidov (see Monument to N. N. Demidov.) V. D. has the Volosovo historical and local lore museum, N. K. Roerich museum country estate (Izvara village), Boris Vilde museum house (Yastrebino village), and “Kalitino” exhibition hall. Multiple monuments commemorate events of WW2, incl. “Minor Khatyn’” memorial complex in Bolshoye Zarechye village, and “The Luga Line” diorama museum in Bolshoy Sabsk village. V. D. has 17 houses of culture, 9 clubs, 19 libraries (see Volosovo central district library), 3 schools of music, and N. K. Roerich school of arts in Volosovo. The “Selskaya Nov’” newspaper is published. Agricultural personnel education is provided in the Begunitsi agrarian lyceum and Besedsky technical school in Beseda settlement. On the premises of the horse breeding farm in Begunitsi settlement (JSC Gomontovo) equestrian contests for the Leningrad Oblast Governor Cup have been held since 2001. In Kalitino village, where the North-Western vehicle testing station is located (est. 1949), Oblast competitions of tractor plowmen are held annually. Currently, Greek Orthodox parishes are active in Volosovo, Begunitsi, Bolshaya Vruda, Volgovo, Izvara, Ilyeshi (see St. Nicholas the Miracle Worker Church), Kikerino, Kurkovitsi, Khotnezh, Yastrebino, and Yablonitsi. Some monuments of church architecture has historic and cultural importance and remain unrestored, e.g. Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Yastrebino village.),Church of the Holy Trinity (Pyataya Gora village), Church of St. Peter and St. Paul (Klopitsi village), and the complex of the Convent of the Virgin Mary at Pyataya Gora. Today, parishes of the Evangelic Lutheran Church of Ingria are registered in Volosovo and Gubanitsi, where the Lutheran Church of St. John the Baptist was restored in 1991 and it become a center of renaissance of the Finnish Ingermanlandian culture.
